A bird’s eye viewLuke Plonsky, Ph.D. Research synthesis and meta-analysis (RS/MA) comprise a powerful means of aggregating empirical findings and advancing knowledge within a given research domain. RS/MA also provide secondary researchers with a number of benefits that improve upon traditional reviews. Consequently, the field of instructed second language acquisition (ISLA) has turned increasingly to meta-analysis as the preferred means to provide stable syntheses of empirical findings of a given set of questions. This talk takes a bird’s-eye view on the field of ISLA by considering what we can learn about second language (L2) learning and teaching from the large and growing body of meta-analyses in this domain. In particular, we will discuss the effectiveness of L2 instruction as observed in the contexts of L2 grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and pragmatics and others. In addition to exploring overall effects in these domains, we will also consider a range of moderators that explain systematic variability in observed effects. Practical implications will also be discussed. The roles of language proficiency and study abroad in Japanese students’ receptive pragmatic competenceRod Ellis, Ph.D. Click here for Bio This study investigated the pragmatic competence of 50 Japanese English major students, divided into two groups, one of which participated in a study abroad (SA) program and the other stayed at home (AH) taking normal university classes. Two novel tests were used to measure two aspects of the students’ pragmatic competence. The Irony Test measured their ability to identify negative and positive irony. The Metapragmatic Test measured their ability to identify inappropriate speech acts and their understanding of why they were inappropriate. Results showed that, compared to a group of native speakers, the students had difficulty in identifying both irony—especially positive irony—and speech act inappropriateness. The students’ language proficiency was related to their metapragmatic ability but not to their ability to detect irony. A comparison of the SA and AH students revealed a small advantage for the former in the Metapragmatic Test but not in the Irony Test. Supporting language learners’ autonomy beyond the classroom: Options for research and practiceJo Mynard, Ph.D. Click here for Bio In this session, we will look at ways that language learners can be supported outside the language classroom in terms of opportunities, resources, and linguistic and personal support (Mynard & Shelton-Strong, 2022a/b). Common practices in our field include the provision of self-access facilities, events and learning communities, peer support systems (Peeters & Mynard, 2021), and skills practice centers. However, in order for these resources and opportunities to be meaningful, learners need to be able to take charge of their overall learning process by planning, monitoring and evaluating their learning and managing their motivation as well as their affective and social processes. Much of this awareness raising can start within the classroom, but learners will also need individualised support outside the classroom (Kato & Mynard, 2016, 2022; Mynard & Kato, 2022). We will look at the role that advising in language learning (ALL) plays in this process i.e., the intentional use of reflective dialogue that helps learners to develop their autonomy. Finally, we will look at ways these outside-class support services can be researched. Using Technology to Motivate LearnersHayo Reinders, Ph.D. Click here for Bio What stays the same when everything changes? One of the most profound and perennial challenges language teachers face is how to best engage learners in the language learning experience. Rapidly and regularly changing learning environments, assessment processes and instructional practices can challenge learners in finding and expressing their voice but also offer opportunities for teachers to draw on the affordances of the increased range of educational tools and settings available to them to open up new ways to encourage learner participation. In this practical talk I will draw on three decades of best practice in online, blended and hybrid learning to share recommendations for turning the potential downsides of our changing situations into likely benefits for improving our teaching by encouraging greater learner participation and interaction. Specifically, we will look at ways in which technology can provide more agency to both teachers and learners alike and support language learning beyond the classroom. Memories from the Classroom: Outstanding Teachers’ Recollections of Their Own TeachersKathleen Bailey, Ph.D. Thinking back on your own life as a student, do you remember a teacher who particularly inspired and encouraged you? Was there someone who had a positive influence on you when you were young, who may have even helped lead you to your career as an educator? And conversely, did you know a teacher who discouraged you – who made you feel, at some point in your schooling, that you were not capable of accomplishing very much? Decades of research have shown (not surprisingly) that teachers are a major factor in students’

Anaheim University Ed.D. in TESOL graduate Dr. Linh Phung awarded for entrepreneurial language learning app, Eduling Speak
Dr. Linh Phung, a 2017 graduate of Anaheim University’s Doctor of Education in TESOL program, is CEO of Eduling International LLC or EdulingTM, a company offering online language instruction and services. The company released a first-of-its-kind app, Eduling Speak, which enables English language learners to talk in pairs while completing communicative tasks. The app is like a Netflix of daily tasks that learners can browse and select to complete with a friend or a random learner on the app. Because learners have to collaboratively solve a problem posed by the task, it provides them with a genuine need to communicate. The app is a result of Eduling’s years of research and development in task-based language teaching and gamification in language education. The app can now be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play in 176 countries in the world. “Task-based language teaching has been described as the orthodoxy of language instruction in many countries for decades, but it has been difficult to implement in the classroom,” explained Dr. Linh Phung. “This app offers well-designed tasks that are also gamified to engage learners in meaningful interactions that will drive language development.” Dr. Phung has recently received an Immigrant Entrepreneur Award from Global Pittsburgh for her 15-years of work in language instruction and services. With the goal of developing English learners’ true communicative competence, Eduling Speak offers endless speaking opportunities for English learners of all ages, proficiency levels, and countries. It fills a gap in the app market, where applications mostly focus on mechanical exercises that generally only involve repetition, imitation, and limited interaction with a machine instead of with humans. The key features of the app include: It’s task-based: Learners need to talk to complete a task with a tangible outcome at the end It’s gamified, engaging, and fun It’s interactive: Learners interact with the app and with another English speaker It’s like the Netflix of tasks and games for learners to choose from It’s borderless: It connects English speakers from any location in the world It improves learners’ fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and communication skills About Eduling International LLC: Eduling offers online English language instruction and services to students from any location, including online courses, conversation exchange programs, printed materials, and a language learning app called Eduling Speak. It is based in Pittsburgh, PA and has students from countries around the world.

He went on to direct other horror films including “Attack of the Vegan Zombies!”, “Alyce Kills”, “Zommunists: The Dead Menace”, “Deathchair: The Chair that Eats”, “Primal Rage: The Legend of Konga”, and “Ashes”. Live from Hollywood: Taku Kato, Nikkatsu Corporation International Sales
Anaheim University is excited to announce that we will be hosting Taku Katu of Nikkatsu Corporation International Sales, on Friday, September 10th from 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm California time. We invite Anaheim University students and alumni join us for this special event. Please RSVP by clicking the link below and we can send you the access information for the session. Please also review the bio below and bring your questions for the Q&A portion of the presentation. RSVP Taku Kato Taku Kato Born in Yokohama, Japan, Taku Kato lived in Bangladesh from nine through eleven years old. Joining NIKKATSU in 2014 after graduating from International Christian University, Tokyo, he started his career as an assistant for the producer of the feature film “Their Distance” (2016) directed by Rikiya Imaizumi. From 2017, he joined the current international sales team and has been taking on a variety of films including “Wife of a Spy” (2020) by Kiyoshi Kurosawa which won Silver Lion at 77th Venice International Film Festival and cult masterpiece “Tetsuo” (1989) by Shinya Tsukamoto. He is also selling NIKKATSU classic masterpieces such as the Venice-winning “The Burmese Harp” (1956) by Kon Ichikawa, “Tokyo Drifter” (1966) by Seijun Suzuki. Nikkatsu’s history dates back as early as 1912 when 4 companies merged to form Nippon Katsudo Shashin Corporation, the first film conglomerate in the region to produce, distribute and exhibit theatrical films. In 1952 Chofu Studio was built in Tokyo as the largest modern film studio in the Asia Pacific Region at the time; the studio even had a permanent set of Ginza city. It quickly became the cornerstone of the company’s Golden Era, together with its string of attractive stars who were then all exclusive to Nikkatsu; the legendary superstar Yujiro Ishihara, handsome young actors under the “Nikkatsu New Face” banner including Akira Kobayashi and Joe Shishido; actresses such as Sayuri Yoshinaga and Ruriko Asaoka; and directors Seijun Suzuki and Shohei Imamura. Nikkatsu flourished as the leading studio in Japan, enjoying box office mega-hits with its action films starring Ishihara (“Crazed Fruit”), teenage love stories starring Yoshinaga (“Cupola, Where the Furnaces Grow”), and “Branded to Kill” starring Joe Shishido, works with a continuing international appeal to this day – the films were so successful that Ishihara and Yoshinaga are still regarded as icons of the Showa period. When cinema attendance began to drop, Japanese studios slashed their annual film production. Nikkatsu, however, took a unique turn in 1971 when it launched the “Nikkatsu Roman Porn” brand, namely films for the adult audience. As one director recalls, “I had total creative freedom, as long as I kept some nudity in the film”, the brand enabled Nikkatsu to be the only major studio in Japan at the time to continue producing films and hire young film makers. Thus, Nikkatsu soon became the hub for upcoming innovative talents, and many of the directors who were given this rare opportunity, later became dominant film makers in Japan; amongst them are Oscar winner Youjiro Takita (“Departure”), multi-time Japanese Academy winners Masayuki Suo (“Shall We Dance?”), Yoshimitsu Morita, Youichi Sai, Shinji Soumai, and many more. The brand continued until 1988 and many films from that time joined our proud classics library. In 2005, Naoki Sato was appointed President of the company. Originally a producer himself, Nikkatsu’s recent array of titles under his leadership includes cutting-edge genre films by Sion Sono and Takashi Miike, and dramatical masterpieces. They have been highly acclaimed, including numerous Japanese Academy winners and nominees such as “Rebirth”, “Cold Fish” and “The Devil’s Path”. Abstracts Inspiration, Motivation, Humiliation: Outstanding Teachers’ ReflectionsKathleen Bailey, Ph.D. Teachers influence learners in ways beyond promoting the mastery of skills and knowledge. Indeed, attitudes and emotions are also important part of the relationships among teachers and students. In this interactive presentation, we will explore the ways in which several award-winning teachers were inspired and motivated by their own teachers. But looking at the dark side of the past, we will also learn how their teachers humiliated and discouraged them. Participants will reflect on their own experiences and think about how they wish to be remembered by their future students. Value-Driven Research: Tips for Getting PublishedHayo Reinders, Ph.D. Click here for Bio In this informal presentation, I will look at the topic of getting published and – more broadly – at disseminating your work. I will start by looking at the many reasons (personal, professional, and academic) that teachers and academics have for sharing their research, observations, reflections and experiences with the wider community, and the range of possible ‘ outputs ’. I will review the broad range of platforms and channels available nowadays, from traditional anonymous peerreviewed journals, published teaching materials, practitioner-oriented forms of publishing, as well as less formal social networks. I will highlight some of the potential pitfalls and some strategies for choosing the most appropriate avenue for publishing your work. In the later part of the presentation, I will offer some ‘insider tips ’ to increase the chance of getting your work published. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions! The significance of the implicit vs the explicit distinction for language pedagogyRod Ellis, Ph.D. Click here for Bio This talk will begin by briefly examining the following distinctions: (1) implicit vs. explicit learning, (2) implicit vs. explicit knowledge and (3) implicit vs. explicit instruction. It will examine the significance of these distinctions for language pedagogy by addressing the following questions: How can teachers cater to ‘implicit learning’ in classroom instruction? How can teachers cater to ‘explicit learning’ in classroom instruction? What role does ‘explicit learning/ knowledge’ play in L2 learning? What constitutes an appropriate balance between implicit and explicit language instruction in a language curriculum? The talk concludes with examples of how ‘tasks’ can be used to construct a curriculum that maximises opportunities for students to develop their implicit and explicit knowledge of a second/foreign language in a classroom context. Being a ‘Good’ Leader (in Language Education): “How Hard Can It Be?”Andy Curtis, Ph.D. Click here for Bio That question became one of the recurring themes during the recent AU Ed.D. EDU 720 course, Leadership and Management in Language Education. And the answer to that particular question turned out to be: It can be extremely hard to be a ‘good’ leader/manager in language education, for a whole host of reasons, some of which are under the individual’s control, but many of which are not. And in terms of language educators being reflective practitioners (as we all are supposed to be these days) due to the highly compacted and intense nature of our Ed.D. courses, the time for in-depth reflection must often wait until the course has ended. In that sense, and perhaps somewhat paradoxically, the deepest levels of long-term learning may begin in earnest when the course ends. Therefore, in this presentation I will review the 100,000-plus words of EDU 720 written discussion, in the 500-plus Discussion Board postings, the 12 hours of live/real-time online classes, the assessments and the assignments, as well as primary questionnaire and interview data from leaders in different countries, to highlight some of the main leadership learning points that we hope will last long after the course itself has become a distant memory. In this talk, we will also be connecting the learning points from our EDU 720 course with a new book, which brings together, for the first time, three centuries of lived language education leadership experience: Reflecting on Leadership in Language Education (Curtis, January 2022, Equinox Publishing: https://www.equinoxpub.com) Making connections: Public memory and language teachingJohn Macalister, Ph.D. Click here for Bio If you travel around New Zealand, my home country, you will find memories of past wars evoked in cities and towns, in rural areas, even in what appears to be the middle of nowhere. These ‘memory places’ are not, of course, unique to New Zealand. They are found throughout the world, and can take many forms, such as museums, monuments, and memorials. Nor are all memory places evoking past conflicts. They are all, however, places that shape public memory. In the shaping of public memory, these memory places draw on different semiotic resources, including language. As a result, they can be
