He currently serves as the Director of the Australian Research Council Training Centre in Energy Technologies for Future Grids and is a Senior Professor at the University of Wollongong in Australia. Notably, in 2024, Dr. Muttaqi achieved one of the highest honors in his profession by attaining fellowship with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), USA.
