Transformative Education: Empowering Leaders in TESOL
Dr. Okon Effiong graduated from Anaheim University’s online Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MA in TESOL) degree program in 2008. He went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of Southampton and is currently a lecturer at the University of Qatar, the founder of the Africa English Language Teachers Association (Africa ELTA), and is the 2025 President-Elect of the TESOL International Association. Dr. Effiong shared his experience with Anaheim University:
“I greet you with gratitude and a deep sense of appreciation as I share my journey as a proud graduate of the online Master of Arts in TESOL program at Anaheim University. My time at this institution has been nothing short of life-changing, paving the way for remarkable professional growth and empowering me to contribute meaningfully to the field of English language education, both in Africa and beyond.
At Anaheim University, I found not just a school but a family of dedicated educators, mentors, and peers who are shaping the future of language teaching worldwide. Learning under the guidance of renowned professors like Dr. David Nunan, Dr. Rod Ellis, and Dr. Kathleen Bailey was an honor. These respected leaders in TESOL brought rigor, wisdom, and a personal commitment to every lesson. Their teachings were not only rooted in theory but also rich in practical application, preparing me to tackle the real challenges that teachers and learners face daily.
The MA TESOL program was more than just a degree for me; it became a tool of transformation. It sharpened my research and teaching skills, gave me a global perspective, and bolstered my confidence to lead. I can boldly say that this qualification was instrumental in helping me achieve key leadership roles, including my recent appointment as President-Elect of TESOL International Association—one of the most prestigious positions in our field. In this capacity, I aim to advocate for English teachers and learners across diverse contexts, building on the values instilled in me by Anaheim University. I must mention Dr. Andy Curtis, who did not teach me in the MA program, but was instrumental for my rise through the professional leadership pipeline. Dr. Curtis has been priming me over the years and it is indeed fulfilling, thanks to his mentoring efforts, to be mandated to lead TESOL International Association.
The global nature of the program stood out as one of its greatest strengths. Engaging with classmates from various countries and backgrounds gave me insights that transcend borders, and the residential sessions allowed me to meet these brilliant individuals in person, cementing connections that continue to enrich my career. These experiences reinforced my belief that education is a bridge that unites us, regardless of where we come from.
Anaheim University’s emphasis on a “Students First, Always” philosophy was evident in every interaction. From the accessibility of professors to the responsiveness of staff, I always felt supported. This environment gave me the confidence to not only excel academically but also to dream big and act on those dreams.
One of the proudest moments of my career was founding the Africa English Language Teachers Association (Africa ELTA) in 2016. Today, Africa ELTA connects over 25 affiliate countries across the continent and includes 5,000+ members from 94 countries. Despite operating without corporate funding, Africa ELTA thrives as a hub for professional development, supporting teachers through collaboration and a shared vision. Much of the resilience and teamwork that led to this success can be traced back to the lessons I learned during my time at Anaheim University.
I am deeply passionate about empowering African teachers and giving them platforms to grow and share their expertise. Anaheim University played a critical role in equipping me with the knowledge, leadership skills, and confidence to contribute to this cause. From organizing international conferences to mentoring young educators, I see the fingerprints of Anaheim’s values in everything I do.
Anaheim University has touched lives not just in Africa but across the globe. Its commitment to excellence, innovative teaching methods, and the creation of a global learning community make it an institution worthy of recognition and support. I firmly stand in support of its reaccreditation, and I hope my story demonstrates the far- reaching impact of its programs.”
